Before the invention of thick paper coasters in the 1880s, a German Hoffbräuhaus (beer hall) would have used pads made of thick felt to protect their wood tables from sweating pints of lager. Even though they have been replaced, Germans still refer to coasters as ‘Bierfilzl’ or ‘beer felt’.
